Hobbiton is an enchanting movie set created in 1999 for Sir Peter Jackson’s films in. Guided tours began in 2002 and have been running ever since. Now Matamata biggest attraction, Hobbiton welcomes thousands of guests every year and has quickly become Matamata’s biggest toursit attraction.

The movie set is just a few minutes out of Matamata through rolling rural hills. The 20 minute drive to The Shire’s Rest™ will show you exactly why Sir Peter Jackson chose the mighty Waikato for the movie set. In 2009 they returned to shoot The Hobbit trilogy leaving behind the now permanent reconstructed Hobbit Holes. The still fully working Alexander family farm has been kind enough to keep the movie set open and we invite you to experience the magic.

There are a few ways to see the movie set and we have listed them below in our Hobbiton Movie Set Itinerary. We recommend booking your tour in advance so that you may avoid being told that we are fully booked, especially in our summer months. You can contact us by phone or email and visit us in person.

Option 1

Standard Tour

2.5 hours from Shire’s Rest back to Shire’s Rest

If you are planning a trip and will not have your own transportation there is an option for you. You can take a Hobbiton™ shuttle bus from Matamata i-SITE at 11am in perfect time for the 11am tour.

You can purchase these tickets over the phone or in person at our i-SITE and also online. If you cannot find a booking for a specific date or time we recommend calling the i-SITE so that we can help!

Alternatively, if you wish to make your way there in your own vehicle it is approximately 15-20 minutes outside of town on rural roads.

Lunch Combo & Tour

Enjoy a hearty lunch spread served inside the festive Party Marquee.

Numbers are limited, so bookings are essential as tours sell-out well in advance. Special dietary requirements can be catered for, please include details at time of booking. Please note, that while we offer gluten-free menu options, we are not a gluten-free kitchen.

Option 3

Events and Banquets

Events and Banquets are another way to see our beloved Hobbiton™. The banquet tour does not run every night and is regularly fully booked, so we ask you to inquire ahead of time. You will be presented with a beautiful two course banquet feast served inside The Green Dragon Inn fit for a Hobbit and after a lantern-lit walk through the movie set.

There are also special events held year round and these do fully book as well. If you are wanting to get the full effect of the movie set we recommend this option as you will not be disappointed. Advance bookings recommended.

You can visit the stalls and sample some traditional Hobbit fare, enjoy the roaming themed entertainers and join in on the themed interactive games with prizes to be won!
