Hobbiton™ Movie Set Itinerary
Hobbiton™ Movie Set Itinerary
”The movie set is just a few minutes out of Matamata through rolling rural hills. The 20 minute drive to The Shire’s Rest™ will show you exactly why Sir Peter Jackson chose the mighty Waikato for the movie set. In 2009 they returned to shoot The Hobbit trilogy leaving behind the now permanent reconstructed Hobbit Holes. The still fully working Alexander family farm has been kind enough to keep the movie set open and we invite you to experience the magic.”
There are a few ways to see the movie set and we have listed them below in our Hobbiton Movie Set Itinerary. We recommend booking your tour in advance so that you may avoid being told that we are fully booked, especially in our summer months. You can contact us by phone or email and visit us in person.
We ask that you look carefully at your booking confirmation as to where your tour is set to depart from. The Shire’s Rest™ and the Matamata i-SITE are two separate departure points. Read the options below for more information!
What To Bring
We recommend leaving luggage and large bags behind as you will be walking through the movie set for 2 hours.
Times For Excursions
The Shire’s Rest™ has tours running every 10-20 minutes with hours changing in the quieter months.
PLEASE NOTE: The Shire’s Rest™ must be reached by YOUR OWN mode of transportation and a shuttle will pick you up at 501 Buckland Rd. to drive you to the movie set.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I depart from the i-SITE or The Shire’s Rest™?
PLEASE check your booking confirmation ahead of time to see where your departure point is from. The i-SITE is located in the centre of Matamata and only has 6 tours departing daily with a shuttle included. The Shire’s Rest™ is located on 501 Buckland Rd, Hinuera, and you must drive yourself to this location.
Can I see the movie set without a tour?
No, the movie set is located 3km into a working farm and can only be seen by a guided tour.
Our goal here at the i-SITE is to ensure that you leave New Zealand with fond memories of your great advenutres! In order for us to meet our goal we offer up our services to you everyday. Please contact us or come in so that we can help plan your trip here in Aotearoa (New Zealand)!
Your Adventure Starts Here!
Shuttle to Tour
If you are planning a trip to New Zealand and will not have your own transportation there are two options for you. You can either take a Hobbiton™ shuttle bus from Matamata OR Rotorua. These options are a bit more limited because there are only 6 buses leaving from the Matamata i-SITE and 2 from Rotorua.
You can purchase these tickets over the phone or in person at our i-SITE and also online. If you cannot find a booking for a specific date or time we recommend calling the i-SITE so that we can help!
Self-Drive to The Shire’s Rest™
The Shire’s Rest™ is the second departure option for the Hobbiton™ Movie Set. There are more times and tours running from the Shire’s Rest™, being that it is an onsite departure point and ticketing office.
In order to make a booking for the Shire’s Rest™ you need to be aware that this is a SELF-DRIVING option. The only way to get to the Shire’s Rest™ departure point is by car. It is approximately 15-20 minutes outside of town on rural roads.
This is a great option if you have your own car or have rented as you are required to drive yourself to this departure point. We can also book these tickets here at the i-SITE for you!
Events and Banquets
Events and Banquets are another way to see our beloved Hobbiton™. The banquet tour does not run every night and does fully book in advance, so we ask you to inquire ahead of time. You will be presented with a beautiful dinner spread at the Green Dragon and will also end with a short walk through the set lit up at night!
There are also special events held year round and these do fully book as well. If you are wanting to get the full effect of the movie set we recommend this option as you will not be disappointed.
“You can visit the stalls and sample some traditional Hobbit fare, enjoy the roaming themed entertainers and join in on the themed interactive games with prizes to be won!”
